The Sharadamba Temple at Sringeri is the heart of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, the first of the four mathas established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. It stands on the bank of the Tunga river and enshrines the goddess Sharadamba, a form of Saraswati.

The gilded shrine, the riverside setting where pilgrims feed the tame fish, and the living tradition of Vedic learning make it one of the most revered pilgrimage centres in Karnataka.
