Sultan Battery is a squat black-stone watchtower built by Tipu Sultan in 1784 at Boloor, on the bank of the Gurupura river near where it meets the sea. It was raised to guard the approach to Mangaluru’s harbour against warships.
Shaped almost like a small fort with mounts for cannon, it is now a quiet monument; a short climb up gives views over the backwater, and a ferry runs across to Tannirbhavi from nearby.
