The Srikanteshwara Temple, also called the Nanjundeshwara Temple, stands at Nanjangud on the banks of the Kapila (Kabini) river about 23 km south of Mysuru. One of the largest and most revered Shaiva temples in Karnataka, it is known as the "Dakshina Kashi" (the Kashi of the South).
Its origins reach back to the Ganga and Chola periods and it was enlarged under the Hoysalas, Vijayanagara and the Mysore Wodeyars, giving it a towering gopuram, a long pillared corridor and many shrines. The twice-yearly Dodda Jatre chariot festival draws vast crowds.
