1. Hill Palace Museum, Tripunithura
The Hill Palace Museum was the official residence of the Maharajas of Cochin, built in 1865 and now Kerala’s largest archaeological museum. The 49-building complex spreads across 54 acres of grounds and includes a heritage museum of royal collections, a deer park and a prehistoric park — give it a couple of hours. It sits at Tripunithura, about 12 km south-east of Ernakulam city.
2. Cherai Beach, Vypin Island
Cherai Beach runs along the northern side of Vypin Island, about 25 km from the city and roughly 20 km from the airport. It’s one of Kerala’s most-visited beaches — a long stretch of sand backed by coconut groves, with calm, shallow water and the backwaters running just behind the shoreline. Reach Vypin by road, by the government ferry, or on the Kochi Water Metro.
3. Kerala Folklore Museum, Thevara
Closer in, the Kerala Folklore Museum at Thevara (about 6 km south of the centre) is a privately founded treasure house of Kerala folk art — masks, sculptures, terracotta, paintings, costumes, lamps and instruments — set inside a building constructed in traditional Kerala styles with salvaged timber and carvings. A wooden theatre upstairs stages classical and folk performances.
