Thiruvidaimarudur's Mahalingaswamy temple is one of the major Shiva temples of the delta, revered as the Madhyarjuna (central Marudur) shrine and, in tradition, held on a par with Kasi (Varanasi).

The site is very old, with the present masonry structure attributed to the Chola period and later expansions to the Nayaks, resulting in a large complex of towers, corridors and subsidiary shrines.
