Talakad (Talakadu) is an ancient temple town on a sweeping bend of the Kaveri about 45 km from Mysuru, where wind-blown river sand has repeatedly buried and re-exposed its Ganga, Chola and Hoysala temples. Legend ties the sand and a royal curse to the fall of the town.
Several temples, including the Vaidyanatheshwara shrine, are periodically dug out of the dunes; every twelve years the Panchalinga Darshana festival draws large pilgrim crowds to worship five Shiva lingas in a single day.
