Virupaksha Temple
The Virupaksha Temple is the spiritual heart of Hampi and the only major temple still in active worship among the ruins. Dedicated to Virupaksha, a form of Shiva, and to his consort Pampa, it has roots in the 7th century and grew under the Vijayanagara kings into the grand complex seen today.

The Virupaksha Temple is the spiritual heart of Hampi and the only major temple still in active worship among the ruins. Dedicated to Virupaksha, a form of Shiva, and to his consort Pampa, it has roots in the 7th century and grew under the Vijayanagara kings into the grand complex seen today.
Its eastern gopuram rises about 50 m over Hampi Bazaar and the Tungabhadra; inside are pillared halls, a colonnaded courtyard, an inverted pinhole image of the tower and the temple elephant Lakshmi. It remains a working pilgrimage site with daily rituals.
