Gudekote Fort crowns a boulder hill above Gudekote village in Kudligi taluk, on the dry Ballari-facing edge of the district. It was the stronghold of a line of Palegars (local chieftains) and is built in tiers up the natural granite.
The unrestored ruins include bastioned walls, gateways, cisterns, a stepped "cradle well" and huge megalithic blocks; local tradition holds that the fort held off Tipu Sultan. The climb is rough but rewarding, with wide plateau views.
