Kerala Tourism classifies houseboats by standard — Diamond (highest), Gold Star, Silver Star and the eco Green Palm — so book a classified boat and ask for its classification and registration number. The most common scam is a glossy listing that doesn’t match the boat you board, or extra AC-hour and tax charges added afterwards. Get a written quote covering the boat, route, AC hours, meals and taxes, and pay the advance to a business account.
Private vs shared, day vs overnight
For a couple or a calm night, book a private boat. A day cruise (roughly 5–6 hours) is cheaper and enough to get the feel; an overnight (check-in around noon, check-out around 9am, meals included) is the full experience, mooring on the water for the night. Solo travellers can save by taking a single cabin on a larger shared boat.

What a night aboard is like
A typical overnight boat comes with a small crew — a captain, a cook and a helper. You board around midday, and the boat drifts the wider lakes and canals through the afternoon while lunch is cooked fresh on board, often including karimeen (pearl-spot fish). By late afternoon the boat moors at the canal edge for the night — houseboats aren’t allowed to cruise after dark — so you watch the sunset over the paddy fields, have dinner aboard, and wake to mist on the water. There’s no through-the-night cruising, which is exactly what makes it peaceful.
