The Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple (Cheluvarayaswamy) crowns the hill town of Melukote and is one of the most important Sri Vaishnava centres in Karnataka, closely associated with the 12th-century philosopher-saint Ramanuja, who lived here for years.

The temple is famed for its rich treasury of jewels — above all the Vairamudi (diamond crown), brought under guard once a year for the great Vairamudi festival, when huge crowds gather. The hilltop Yoga Narasimha shrine and the stepped Kalyani tank complete the pilgrimage.
