The Hazara Rama Temple was the private chapel of the Vijayanagara royal family, set within the royal (urban core) enclosure. Its name — "a thousand Ramas" — comes from the hundreds of relief panels covering its walls and pillars.

The outer walls carry friezes of processions, elephants, horses and dancers, while inner bands narrate the Ramayana in sequence; four polished black-granite pillars stand in the mandapa. It is compact, richly carved and easy to read as a story in stone.
