Uchangidurga is an ancient hill fortress near Harapanahalli, once the capital of the Nolamba-Pallavas and later the Uchangi-Pandya chiefs before passing to Vijayanagara and later powers. Its ramparts climb a steep granite hill in rings.
The trek up passes gateways and bastions to a hilltop crowned by a temple of Uchchangi Ellamma (Durga), from which there are wide views over the Deccan plains. It is a strenuous but rewarding half-day climb.
