Vasco da Gama's first grave
When the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524, on his third visit to India, he was buried inside this church. His remains were moved to Lisbon about fifteen years later — but the spot is still marked, and standing beside it is the closest most visitors come to the age of exploration that reshaped this coast.
A building that changed hands
The church mirrors Cochin's colonial relay: built Roman Catholic under the Portuguese, it passed to the Dutch Protestants in the 17th century and to the Anglicans under the British.
